Welcome to Selby Church, we’re really glad you’re here!
We want it to be easy for you to come and enjoy church.
We know that first-time visits to any church raise many questions and concerns. Here’s a quick look at some frequently asked questions that will hopefully give you a better idea of what to expect when you visit.
Where do I park?
You can park on the streets surrounding the church. We don’t have a parking lot, but there is more than enough street parking. If you need wheelchair accessible parking there are dedicated spots near the back of the church along with a ramp which will take you to our lift.
Where do I go?
On Sunday morning, greeters are located at both entrances to the church (front and rear). These greeters will give you a bulletin (including the order of service and announcements) and help you find your way.
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably. We’re more concerned with meeting your needs than focusing on what you wear. While some people choose to dress up, most people wear casual clothing.
When do I need to arrive?
Most of the year, Sunday morning services are at 10:00 a.m. It’s a good idea to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the service to allow adequate time for parking and getting into the church. We also have an informal gathering in the downstairs hall that begins at 9:15 am. This gathering includes a complete breakfast buffet (cold cereal, homemade waffles, fruit, baked goods and toast) and is available at no charge. This breakfast time provides a lively space for young families where kids can eat, play and socialize before worship.
Where do my children go?
Selby Church offers a nursery for infant childcare. Just ask an usher and we’d be happy to introduce you to the teen and adult working in the nursery that week. Kids ages 3+ stay with their parents for about 15 minutes of worship and then all the kids head downstairs for their own program led by our great team of volunteers. The kids will watch videos, do crafts, hear Bible stories and talk about Jesus. We’re pretty serious about making church a place that kids want to be!
Is the church handicap accessible?
Yes. There is reserved parking on the south east side of the building. The building is also equipped with wheelchair accessible entrances and handicap accessible restrooms. The church’s lift gives access to the upstairs sanctuary and the downstairs hall. If you have particular needs please call the church office and we would be glad to help in any way we can.
How are visitors recognized?
It’s important to us that you have a wonderful worship experience at Selby, without being made to feel uncomfortable in any way. Nobody will ask you to stand up or do anything to single you out. We want you to feel so good about your experience that you’ll want to return again soon.
What is a worship service like?
Worship services normally last about an hour. We begin by standing and singing a “gathering song.” Then one of our kids lights a candle, we have a few announcements, and then one of our kids leads us in a “call to worship.” Then we sing a song and the minister has a chat with the kids about a topic or theme of the service. After this the kids usually head downstairs for their own program. We pray together a prayer of confession, there are some Bible readings, and the minister offers a “sermon” or “talk” that helps bring the Bible readings into our everyday lives. We have some more music and singing, we take up an offering and then we pray together. Our prayer is made up of suggestions from the congregation for things we are grateful for, things in our community/world that we want to lift to God, and our prayers for people who would like to be prayed for. We close with a hymn. Some weeks we follow a slightly different format, but you get the idea…
We hope you’ll join us soon. If there is anything else you’d like to know send Rev. Mike an email ([email protected]).
